How does central air conditioning work?
Your air conditioner doesn't make cold — it moves heat out of your home. Refrigerant absorbs heat from your indoor air, the compressor pumps it outside, the outdoor coil dumps it into the outdoor air, and the refrigerant cycles back to do it again. The blower sends the cooled, dehumidified air through your ducts. Once you picture heat being relocated rather than cold being created, every AC symptom gets easier to read.
What is the refrigeration cycle?
Cooling happens in a loop with three moves. First, cold refrigerant runs through the indoor evaporator coil while the blower pushes warm room air across it, and the refrigerant absorbs the heat. Second, the outdoor compressor squeezes that refrigerant hot and the outdoor condenser coil releases the heat into the outside air with a fan. Third, an expansion valve drops the pressure so the refrigerant turns cold again and heads back indoors to absorb more. Round and round — the refrigerant is just a courier carrying heat from inside to outside.
What do the indoor and outdoor units do?
A central system is split into two boxes joined by refrigerant lines. The indoor unit — the evaporator coil, the blower, the filter, and the condensate drain — is where heat is absorbed and where the cool air is pushed out to your ducts. The outdoor unit holds the compressor that drives the whole cycle and the condenser coil and fan that release the heat outside. There is no cold being created and stored, so closing vents doesn't "save the cold," and setting the thermostat lower doesn't cool any faster — it just runs longer. When cooling is weak, the real question is why heat isn't moving well: usually low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or poor airflow. Ice on the refrigerant lines isn't extra cooling — it's a sign of a problem. And the outdoor unit blowing hot air is exactly what it should do.
