How many zones do you actually need?
The honest answer is one head per area you genuinely want to control on its own — and no more, because over-zoning just adds cost. Give a dedicated head to each room you'll set differently, to a large or open space a single head can't reach, and to any room with its own comfort complaint. But an open floor plan can often be served by one well-placed head, rooms you rarely use can be skipped, and on a tight budget you can start with the zones that matter and expand later (up to the outdoor unit's capacity).
