HVAC repair cost by state 2026: where the repair-or-replace verdict flips
Every repair-or-replace calculator compares your local repair quote against a national replacement average. Replacement is the labour-heavy half, and labour is the part that moves by state — so the comparison is lopsided, and the verdict it produces bends with geography. We priced both halves in all 51 states to measure how far it bends.
- A $2,203 air-conditioner repair quote splits the country almost exactly in half — it means "replace" in 25 states and "repair" in 26. Same system, same failure, same quote, opposite advice.
- The repair-or-replace threshold ranges $1,983 to $2,517 for a central AC — a $534 swing created entirely by where the house sits.
- California prices HVAC work 27% above Arkansas, the widest gap in the index (×1.107 against ×0.869).
- Heat pumps carry the widest geographic swing of any system — a $700 spread between the states at either end, because they are the costliest system to replace.
- Almost none of the variation is the part itself. A capacitor costs about the same everywhere; labour, overhead and rent are what move — which is why the gap is widest on replacement and narrowest on a component swap.
What does an HVAC repair actually cost in each state?
A typical home HVAC repair runs $125–$800 in a state priced at the national average, and across all 51 states the same repair spans $110 to $885. The diagnostic visit that precedes it costs $65–$220 depending on the state, and shop labour runs $65–$165 an hour.
The table below carries every state: its cost index, the typical repair band, the service-call fee, and the hourly labour rate those figures rest on. It is not truncated — the whole point of a by-state table is that your state is in it.

What does each repair cost, and how far does it move by state?
The part is what decides your bill, and it is the one element that barely moves geographically — a capacitor is a national commodity. What moves is the labour and overhead wrapped around it. Below, all 40 repairs we hold verified pricing for, each shown nationally and then priced at both ends of the country: Arkansas at ×0.869 and California at ×1.107.

What does calling after hours add?
Time of day is the cost axis homeowners control and rarely price. An after-hours, weekend or holiday call carries a 1.5×–2× multiplier on the labour half of the bill. Applied to the national service call of $75–$200, that is $113–$400 before anyone opens the unit — and it compounds with state labour rates, so the same 2am call costs measurably more in California than in Arkansas.
Multiplier verified against two 2026 pricing guides that agree on the 1.5×–2× band. Both also mention weekend and holiday work reaching 2–3×; that top end appears in only one of them, so it is not published here.

Why does a national average give the wrong answer?
State-level HVAC price comparisons already exist; contractors' cost guides publish a handful of state averages, and every homeowner has read that repairs "cost more in California." What none of them do is follow the number through to the decision it changes.
The rule homeowners are told to use — the one-third rule — is a ratio: replace when the repair quote tops a third of replacement cost. The numerator is a real local quote from a real local contractor. The denominator, in every published calculator we could find, is a national average. Hold the denominator national and the rule silently tilts: in a lower-cost state the true threshold sits below the national one, so homeowners are told to repair when their own market says replace, and in a higher-cost state the reverse.
So we localized both halves. The result is the first published measurement of how much of the repair-or-replace answer is decided by geography rather than by the equipment.
Where does the same quote get the opposite answer?
The chart below plots the one-third threshold for a central air conditioner in all 51 states. The vertical line is a $2,203 repair quote. Every state whose threshold falls to the left of that line tells the homeowner to replace; every state to the right tells them to repair.
The split is not a rounding artefact. It holds across every system we priced: the quote that divides the country most evenly is $2,138 for a furnace, $2,818 for a heat pump, $2,088 for a boiler, and $1,368 for a mini split. In each case roughly half the country would be advised one way and half the other, on identical facts.
What is the threshold for a furnace, boiler, heat pump or mini split?
Each system carries its own threshold, because a third of a costlier replacement is a bigger number. The heat pump shows the widest geographic swing at $700 between the states at either end, and the mini split the narrowest at $334. Below each system's own replace-above figure, for every state:

What actually moves a state up the ranking?
Three things, and the part in the box is not one of them.
Labour and overhead, not components. A capacitor, a contactor, a control board — these are national commodities that cost roughly the same wherever they ship. What differs is the hour of skilled labour attached to installing them, and the rent, insurance, vehicle and licensing costs loaded into that hour. This is why the study localizes with an all-items price parity rather than a parts index: the thing that varies is the cost of operating a business in that state, not the hardware.
The heavier the labour content, the wider the spread. Replacement is the most labour-intensive job in the table and shows the widest geographic gap; a service call, which is mostly a fixed dispatch fee, shows the narrowest. That ordering is the internal consistency check on the whole method — if a small component swap varied as much as a full system replacement, the model would be wrong.
System class sets the stakes. Heat pumps carry the widest absolute swing ($700) simply because they are the most expensive system to replace, so a third of that number is a bigger number. Mini splits show the narrowest, for the mirror-image reason — and that has a counterintuitive consequence covered on mini-split repair cost: cheaper equipment makes a large repair less worth doing, not more.
How do you decide between a repair and a replacement?
Take your state's threshold from the table above and compare your repair quote against it. Below the threshold, repair; above it, price a replacement — but run two checks before you act on that number, because the rule is a tiebreaker, not the whole decision.
Check the age first, because age outranks the rule. A central air conditioner or heat pump lasts 12–15 years, a furnace or mini split 15–20, a boiler 20–25. Under roughly two-thirds of that span, one failed part is worth fixing whatever the threshold says. Past the span, a large repair rarely returns its cost, again whatever the threshold says. The threshold decides the middle band, where age gives no answer.
Then check for the failures that end the argument. A cracked heat exchanger on a furnace is a replacement at any age, because it can put carbon monoxide into the house — that is a safety call, not an economic one. A compressor or evaporator coil on an ageing air conditioner running an older refrigerant is the mirror case: the repair is technically possible and the economics almost never justify it.
Two things this study adds to that procedure. First, the threshold you compare against should be your state's, not the national one — that is the whole finding, and in Arkansas the AC threshold sits $534 below California's. Second, a replacement quote you have been given beats any modelled midpoint; if a contractor has priced a new system for you, run the rule against that figure instead.

Methodology and limits
Two inputs. National repair, part and replacement bands come from our published cost baseline, where every figure is verified against two named sources — HomeGuide, Fixr, Angi, Carrier and HVAC Pro Sales 2026 guides — before it is used anywhere on this site. Each band is then multiplied by that state's Regional Price Parity, all items, 2024, published by the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, expressed here as a multiplier where the national average is 1.000.
The threshold is one third of the midpoint of the state's replacement band. The midpoint is used rather than either edge because the low end of a replacement range is a basic like-for-like swap and the high end is premium variable-speed equipment; a rule anchored to either edge answers a question the homeowner did not ask. Both edges are published in the table so the spread behind the single number is visible.
Limits, stated plainly. These are modelled estimates, not observed transaction prices. BEA regional price parity is an all-items measure covering the whole consumption basket, not an HVAC-labour index — it is the closest public state-level proxy available for what it costs to run a contracting business in a state, and it remains a proxy. Real quotes also vary by metro within a state, by season, by equipment brand and by the individual contractor, and none of that is captured here. Anyone republishing these figures should describe them as modelled.
Reproducibility. The same arithmetic runs the cost figures on our city pages and the calculator on our repair-or-replace guide, through one shared code path, so the study cannot disagree with the rest of the site. How much does an HVAC repair cost by state?
A typical central-AC repair runs about $110–$695 in Arkansas and $140–$885 in California, with every other state between them. These are modelled figures: national bands verified against two published sources each, adjusted by the Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parity for each state.
Which state has the most expensive HVAC repairs?
California carries the highest cost multiplier in the index at ×1.107, followed by District of Columbia and Hawaii. Arkansas sits at the other end at ×0.869. The gap between them is 27% — meaning the identical repair, on identical equipment, is priced 27% apart depending only on where the house is.
Does the repair-or-replace decision change by state?
Yes, and that is this study's main finding. The one-third rule says replace when the repair quote tops a third of replacement cost. Replacement cost is local, so the threshold ranges from $1,983 to $2,517 for a central AC. What is the one-third rule?
Replace the system when the repair quote exceeds one-third of what replacing it would cost; repair below that. It scales with the system's class, which is why it is more useful than the flat $5,000 rule, and it is less replace-leaning than the 50% rule. What is the most expensive HVAC repair?
The compressor on an air conditioner or heat pump, and the heat exchanger on a furnace — both are sealed-system or combustion components whose replacement approaches the cost of a new system. In California, where prices run ×1.107 of the national level, either repair lands close enough to that state's $2,517 threshold that replacement usually becomes the better value on anything but a young system.

Rarely. Standard policies cover sudden, accidental damage from a covered peril — a lightning strike or a falling tree — not the wear-and-tear failure that causes almost every repair in this study. A home warranty is a different product and may cover the repair subject to a service fee, coverage caps and maintenance requirements. Read what is actually covered before counting on it.

Yes — the dataset is CC BY 4.0. Two CSVs are published: the state summary (51 states × 5 systems) and the repair-by-repair detail (40 repairs × 51 states, 2,040 rows, standard and after-hours).
